» September 1st, 2004 || Lena Olin is in Casanova!!
According to two articles from Swedish magazines
Aftonbadet
and
Svenska Dagbladet
, Lena is working with Lasse on Casanova.
Thanks to Sammy, Lenaolin.net has the
translation
for the Svenska Dagbladet article, which contains a brief description of her role in the movie:
"LO will spend this fall in Venice with "Casanova", a romantic comedy with 18th Century costumes. Olin plays a venice lady who tries to arrange a marriage for her daughter. At the moment, Lasse Hallström is getting new help for the manuscript by the playwright Tom Stoppard. It is the first time since "Chocolat" they are working together."
It also contains this interesting tidbit about Lasse and a future project with Tom Hanks:
"In the middle of all this hullabaloo and constant remakes, costumes, money, the producer Disney and everything, Lasse is still so calm. There is one reason why he has come as far in Hollywood as he has: his simplicity and closeness to the actors. In November, they are going back home to Bedford outside NY when Lasse plans to shoot a movie with Tom Hanks."

According to
The Z Review
, Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Casanova, Lasse's current project.
"Jeremy Irons is to star in Lasse Hallstrom's Casanova along with Heath Ledger and Sienna Miller. Irons will play Pucci in the film about the famed seducer who learns the meaning of true love when he meets a woman immune to his charms. A new draft of the script is being worked on by Michael Cristofer."
In other news, I made a

[...]Hallstrom, a shaggy teddy bear given to shapeless T -shirts, whose singsong voice is so soft that one has to lean forward to hear him, was her first choice. "Lasse captures true characters in complex emotional situations," Knowlton says. "He's from Sweden, he knows cold and water. This story is in his bones." Hallstrom comes from some 15 generations of sea captains. He keeps a house near the Stockholm Archipelago, where he sails whenever he has the chance. He actually owns The Ashley Book of Knots, which Proulx quotes at the beginning of most chapters. It's a tough read," he says, grinning. To top it off, his mother's forebears tricked ships to run aground, as Quoyle's did. "One of my ancestors was supposedly decapitated for his crimes," Hallstrom says. "I have pirate blood. Isn't that cool? I hope it's true."[...]

Hanks, Moore Pick
Lick
Tom Hanks and Julianne Moore have saddled up for upcoming western Boone's Lick, and Lasse Hallström is in talks to direct the project. Variety reports that the adaptation of Larry McMurtry's book will focus on a woman (Moore) who packs up her four kids and her father and travels by wagon with her brother-in-law (Hanks) from Boone's Lick, Mo., to Wyoming in order to meet up with her husband.
McMurtry and Diana Ossana will be writing the screenplay from the former's novel, and the project is expected to start filming around the middle of 2005.

Interview by Stephen Thompson:
"Swedish director Lasse Hallström is best known for his respected coming-of-age films My Life As A Dog and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The new The Cider House Rules, based on the John Irving novel and adapted by the author himself, is another fine entry in the genre. The Onion A.V. Club recently spoke to Hallström about working with Irving, location shooting, and his start as ABBA's filmmaker of choice.
The Onion: How did you first get involved with ABBA?
Lasse Hallström: They had seen my first feature, and as a television producer I had made videos—they weren't called videos in those days—with Benny Andersson, one of the members of the group. He was in a band called Hep Stars. So they hired me to make their videos.
O: In the late '70s in Sweden, that must have been like landing an assignment covering royalty. They were one of the biggest pop groups at the time.
LH: They were big, but in Sweden they were looked down upon. It was like working for the devil, because they were commercial and had sold out. I'm happy to see the revival that's going on. But they were a pop group and looked down upon."
